I first started breeding rats around 2010, and quickly fell in love with some of the more fancy types. This led me to start researching and learning as much as I could about all of the different rat varieties in Australia, as well as rat genetics, behaviour, husbandry and the importance of selective breeding to improve/maintain health, temperament and conformation.
I started my Facebook Page - Pokê Rats in 2012, as a way to encourage myself to document my journey as a breeder, and share my progress with others.
I have a background in biology and science education (particularly zoology, animal behaviour and population genetics), and this prior learning greatly helped me on my journey!
After taking a break for a few years when life got in the way, I decided to start breeding rats again in February 2018. I have had to start from scratch again with all of my projects, and this is the reason that I have not advertised any babies yet, as many of the beautiful rats that I came across still needed work to get them to a standard that I would feel happy to send out into the rat community.
I pride myself in being honest and realistic about my many beautiful rat projects. I know I can never guarantee perfection, but I can guarantee honesty and responsible placement of rats in their perfect homes, as well as ongoing support.
Pet Rat Availability
From time to time, Poké Rats will have pet rats available, and will advertise these rats. However, as my first priority is to improve each of my projects, at the moment I generally like to hold back all babies until I have seen how they develop over time. This ensures that I am able to choose the best individuals for the next generation of each project.
Some of my projects are in good shape and approaching being ready for me to sell from future litters, while other projects are needing a lot more work. Due to this, not all the varieties that I have on show will be available for adoption any time soon.
I hope to be able to relax this in future and see some of my lovely rats go to new homes, but in the mean time availabilities will be very limited and always listed. If there are no listings then I don't have any current availabilities.
I am not taking a waiting list at this time.
